State Review and The End of The Year Party

Another competition season has come and gone, and it has been a great one for the Gearheads.  While everything did not turn out quite as we hoped, it has definitely been a year of growth and progress for the team.  This year for the first time in team history, we were an alliance captain at a regional and ended up as a finalist, which along with the Innovation in Controls Award qualified us for both Championships and State.  While we were not picked to be an alliance partner at either event, our ranking at Championships puts us in approximately the top 15% of teams worldwide, and our 8th place finish at State, last Saturday, places us in the top 4% of teams in Minnesota.  Not too shabby for a small team from central Minnesota!

To review how State went last weekend lets start with the numbers.  We ranked 8th out of 36 teams that qualified for State.  Only 36 teams qualify out of 214 or 215 teams Statewide (I have heard both numbers).  At one point during the day, we were ranked as high as 3rd. We have not had time to look through the pictures yet, but here are a couple that we like:

If you would like to see our matches, we recorded them and uploaded them to youtube.  They can be found here:

While we do have one or two off-season competitions, at this point in the school year, we have to bid a fond farewell to our seniors and celebrate all that the year has brought.  We want to recognize and thank the following seniors: Carter Calhoun, Jaeger Johnson,  Rose Kellner, and Justin Fischer. We hope that they will continue their involvement with FIRST in some way, whether it be mentoring, sponsoring, or being a fan and follower.  As one person said "you can't leave FIRST, it doesn't happen, this is a life sentence. Congratulations, the exit ramp was years ago".
